Stargazing Adventure: Chasing Geminid Meteors Near Mussoorie, Uttarakhand

Published by Mubarak Khan on

With our photographic equipment packed, my friends Anup Singh, Veeru Bhai, and I set out from Delhi on a mission to photograph the rare Geminid meteor shower. Our destination was the peaceful and ethereal Cloud’s End, which is close to Mussoorie and is renowned for its stunning vistas and clear night skies.

The Adventure Starts

At 1 PM, we departed from the busy streets of Delhi and embarked on our trip. The road ahead offered a chance to re-establish a connection with nature as well as a photographic opportunity. We arrived at the holy city of Haridwar by dusk.

We kept climbing as dusk approached and eventually reached Cloud’s End at about nine o’clock. The change from the bright lights of the city to the wide expanse of darkness was dramatic and captivating. Having been here several times, this place seemed familiar to me. But it was also Anup and Veeru’s first experience with the peaceful beauty this isolated place had to offer.

Being fresh to this remote location, My buddies were a little afraid of the darkness and wildlife, as they had never been to places like this before.

In the Shadow of the Night Sky

We put up our cameras without wasting any time. The tapestry of stars that was the night sky at Cloud’s End was broken up by the faint glow of Dehradun’s city lights along the southern horizon. The celestial spectacle overhead was a stark contrast to the brilliance of the city below.

We waited for the climax of the meteor shower with patience as the night grew darker. Meteors flashed across the sky, and for hours there were only the sporadic cried outs of ecstasy. Feeling content with our catches around two in the morning, we made the decision to travel to Mussoorie and choose a place to stay.

After shooting the meteor shower, everyone was ready to go back to Delhi. However, we thought about it and decided to rest instead of driving all the way to Delhi non-stop.

In the city of Mussoorie

Mussoorie’s Mall Road was charming when we got up the following morning. After the quiet of Cloud’s End at night, it was a wonderful contrast. With its lively street and chance for some unscripted street photography, visitors may get a taste of the local way of life.

After a hearty breakfast and a brief rest, we decided to explore a new location near Mussoorie. We arrived well before sunset, eager to set up for another night of shooting. Little did we know, nature had a different plan for us. This place was also somewhere near Cloud’s End, about 8 km from Mussoorie.

And here the magic begins.

The Unexpected Sunset

The sky turned into a riot of color as the sun started to set. We were astounded by the magnificent sunset that was created by the flawless blending of orange, pink, and purple hues. We briefly forgot our original objective of photographing the meteor shower because the scene was so compelling.

Unfortunately, clouds moved in as night set, preventing us from taking night sky photos and hiding the stars. It served as a reminder of the inherent unpredictability of nature photography.

Embracing the Unexpected

While we didn’t get the meteor shots we hoped for that second night, the experience was far from disappointing. The unexpected beauty of the sunset was a reward in itself, reinforcing a valuable lesson: in nature photography, always be ready to embrace the unexpected.

Our journey to Cloud’s End and Mussoorie was a blend of meticulous planning and spontaneous moments. It highlighted the importance of being adaptable and open to the surprises that nature can offer. Whether it’s a sky full of meteors or an unplanned, yet breathtaking sunset, each moment holds its unique charm and beauty.

Ultimately, it’s about experiencing and appreciating the beauty of the natural world, not just about getting the ideal shot. Our journey served as a reminder to treasure every moment—planned or unplanned—and to keep traveling with an open mind and a camera in hand.
