A Photographer’s Adventure: Trekking to Hampta Pass

Published by Mubarak Khan on

I went on an exciting hike to Hampta Pass with my friend Anubhav in June. As a nature photographer, I was eager to capture the pristine beauty of Hampta Pass, while Anubhav, not as accustomed to carrying heavy gear, requested we hire a porter to assist with his luggage. Our journey began in different places, but we converged in Manali at 11 AM, the designated starting point of our trek.

Day 1: Manali to Jobra Roadhead (Drive: 2 hours, 18 km | Trek: 1 km, 1 hour)

When we got to Manali, we paid 1800rs for a cab to take us to the Jobra Roadhead. Winding roads and expansive views set the scene for an exciting journey ahead during the drive, which was an exciting experience in and of itself. We started our journey from Jobra. Though we were ready to continue, we camped only a kilometer into the trip. We were able to enjoy the calm surroundings at a lower altitude and adjust more slowly thanks to this choice.

We chose a lovely location for our tent, surrounded by verdant foliage and the sound of distant streams running. As night fell, we cooked a straightforward but tasty dinner of Indian cuisine, savoring the tastes in the embrace of the natural world.

Day 2: Jobra to Jwara (Trek: 9 km, 5-6 hours)

The next morning, after a hearty breakfast, we resumed our trek. The trail led us across rivers via locally made small bridges and occasionally through cold, rushing streams. Each crossing was an opportunity for unique shots, capturing the raw beauty of our surroundings. By evening, we reached Jwara, a charming campsite. Here, we repeated our routine of cooking, eating, and indulging in photography, all the while marveling at the changing landscape.

Cloudy skies during this trek disappointed us, even though we were excited to take night photos. Sadly, we did not have the luck we had hoped for, and we were unable to capture the starry night.

Day 3: Jwara to Balu Ka Gera (Trek: 6 km, 4-5 hours)

On the third day, our journey took us from Jwara to Balu Ka Gera. The trail offered an array of photographic opportunities, from verdant meadows to rocky terrains. We reached our campsite on time, allowing ample moments to set up my gear and capture the ethereal beauty of the Himalayas.

Day 4: Balu Ka Gera to Chatru via Hampta Pass and Shea Goru (Trek: 14 km, 8-9 hours)

Our fourth day started early, at 5 AM. The trail was blanketed in snow, presenting a new challenge. I was prepared, but Anubhav, with less experience and inadequate footwear for snow, struggled. Our porter guide was invaluable, helping us navigate the tricky sections.

Reaching the top of Hampta Pass felt like a triumph. We paused to cook lunch, savoring the achievement amidst breathtaking vistas. However, the day was far from over. As a crossover trek, our journey continued towards Lahaul. The landscape transformed dramatically as we descended into the valley, eventually arriving at the Shea Goru campsite.

Here, the real test of our resolve awaited. We needed to cross a river with a strong flow. I managed to cross, but Anubhav and our porter hesitated, staying back. For a while, we trekked parallel to each other on opposite sides of the river, until we found a snow bridge. Despite the risk of it collapsing due to the warm weather, we crossed safely and reunited.

The final stretch from Shea Goru to Chatru was shorter but still challenging. We navigated patches of snow beside the fast-flowing Chandra River, each step demanding caution and precision. The scenery was mesmerizing, and despite the risks, the thrill of the trek kept us going.

The end of our trek was achieved by evening when we arrived at Chatru in Lahaul. As I thought back on the trip, I had a strong sense of achievement. Along with providing amazing photo ops, the hike put our stamina and fortitude to the test. As Anubhav and I celebrated our successful journey, we were appreciative of the experiences and memories we had made.
